How did you get into modeling?

Growing up I was always the tall and awkward looking girl in school, and American kids made fun of my unique African features. I spent most of my childhood with very low self-esteem. Until one day I decided to embrace my features and at that moment I realized that it is a strength of mine. Fast forward to my sophomore year in high school, I produced and walked in a runway show with my sister. I haven't looked back since that day.

What's Your Modeling Specialty? (Runway, Beauty, Swim, etc.)

High Fashion, which of course includes some Beauty. I love Lingerie and Boudoir modeling as well. I've been published in a variety of styles too; I'd like to think I am a versatile model.

What Are Your Goals For Modeling (Agency signing? Starting your own agency? Other?) And Have You Reached Any Of Them?

To make a living in the industry. To have the opportunity to work with creative individuals. And to do more International work. As for reaching them, yes thankfully I have had some success! Recently I started an Ambassadorship with Yandy and earlier this year I shot with two independent brands in St. Lucia.

What Was Your Best and Worst Modeling Experience/Memory?

My worst memory was the first time I realized that I would always be a black model, and not just a model. My best memory would have to be during NYFW about three years ago, I heard someone yell my name “Onyeka” in the crowd and at that very moment I got the confidence boost I needed to ensure myself that I am making progress in my career.

How Do You Manage To Be A Freelance Model In NYC?

To a certain extent every model is a freelance model. Even signed models still have to hustle to find additional opportunities to make ends meet. I just try to be true to my moral standards for my work and my body. And I diversify my work - it's important to be versatile in this industry!

How Did You Become A VIP Host/Event Planner In NYC? Do You Think That's Helped Your Modeling Career?

I started modeling with a boutique Fashion PR firm called Metropolitan Couture Media Group (MCMG) and from there started to take on different kind of responsibilities. I hosted and planned a few events with them before branching out on my own. This goes back to being versatile. You have to have a broad skill set to be successful.

How Does Your Nigerian Culture Factor Into Your Modeling Artistry?

My features are distinctly Nigerian so my culture impacts every aspect of my modeling. I have a strong, African figure that many of my bookers have told me is very striking, even among other black models. I also love to do culture-themed projects! I would say about half of my published work has some cultural aspect to it.
