#ModelMonday : Some of the Most Important Fashion Industry Quotes

Hey Loves!

Can you believe we’re already at the end of February? Well what better way to end out the month than with a little inspiration from some of fashions’s way-makers? This is still in line with this month’s theme of the history and foundation of the modeling industry in the fashion world and is a great way to move into March. Through this article by Vanessa Helmer we are going to touch on some of the top quotes in the fashion industry. Get your fill below.

Iconic print ads featuring supermodels in haute couture likely come to mind upon hearing “fashion and modeling industry.” However, certain well-spoken individuals have come along and made statements about that same industry (and all that goes along with it) that have been as impactful as the visuals that come out of it.

To capture the essence of the fashion industry, or at least how they see it, within a few sentences is a rare gift. Throughout history, words from respected fashion authorities have had such an effect on readers that these quotes often end up being widely circulated in the same way a visual ad is. Here are six important quotes about fashion that have shaped the way the world views it.

01 Coco Chanel

“I don’t do fashion. I am fashion.”

A woman who is often credited for liberating women from the stuffy fashion constraints they once felt is sure to be free herself, and this quote proves she made her own rules. Although she passed away almost 45 years ago, her legacy is that of a total fashion icon, and she is the only fashion designer to be included in Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People.

02 Jean Cocteau

“Style is a simple way of saying complicated things.”

Known largely for being a champion of the avant-garde movement, Jean Cocteau may not have the notoriety nor the fame of others on this list. However, this French writer was able to sum up what style means to him in only nine words. In those nine words, he effectively captures what many have tried to say about style and fashion for years, but until Cocteau, it was never explained so perfectly.

03 Karl Lagerfeld

"One is never over-dressed or underdressed with a Little Black Dress."

A favorite of models like Cara Delevingne, Karl Lagerfeld’s word is the law for many fashionistas. While Lagerfeld’s impact on the fashion world is certainly greater than just his views on the Little Black Dress, this is one example that proves what Lagerfeld says, goes.

04 Ralph Lauren

“Fashion is not necessarily about labels. It’s not about brands. It’s about something else that comes from within you.”

When Ralph Lauren, the designer of one of the most well-known brands of all time, is quoted saying that fashion isn’t “necessarily about labels”, it’s sure to have an effect on readers. To see those words come from a man who’s made his fortune off of his label expanded the way labels are viewed, while also demonstrating the importance of the person wearing the label, rather than the label itself.

05 Miuccia Prada

“What you wear is how you present yourself to the world, especially today, when human contacts are so quick. Fashion is instant language."

As the face behind both Miu Miu and Prada, Miuccia Prada is a highly respected fashion designer who was even ranked the 75th Most Powerful Woman in the World by Forbes Magazine in 2014. Prada notes the importance of style and fashion in the fast paced communication of today’s world, where you may only have a split second to make an impact.

06 Yves Saint Laurent

“Over the years I have learned that what is important in a dress is the woman who is wearing it.”

Credited with introducing the first tuxedo for women, Saint Laurent was always an innovator and force to be reckoned with in the fashion industry. Once the head designer for Christian Dior and often deemed responsible for the rise of couture, Saint Laurent’s views on fashion are widely respected. This quote is just one of many that have helped secure Saint Laurent’s critical role in the fashion industry.
